First Commercial Usage of GlobalPlatform Device Technology On Mobile Handsets and for DRM

GlobalPlatform Device Technology Integral to New Mobile DRM Solution from Calton Hill

8 May 2008 – GlobalPlatform has announced that its device specification – the GPD/STIP Specification* – has been used by application provider Calton Hill, to provide a secure device software platform which is integral to its new, innovative Digital Rights Management (DRM) solution. SecureSharing from Calton Hill allows protected content such as video, data and music to be shared via a secure digital card used in different mobile devices, such as phone handsets, PDAs and portable video players.

Calton Hill’s SecureSharing solution is the first commercial usage of GlobalPlatform device technology in mobile handsets, and also the first commercial DRM solution based on GPD/STIP. SecureSharing stores encrypted sensitive content on a SanDisk TrustedFlash™ card, which can only be read by secure GlobalPlatform compliant mobile devices. The GPD/STIP Specification provides a totally secure execution environment on the mobile device, allowing the content to be loaded from the card and played on the device without any threat from hackers or illegal copying.

By basing the solution on GlobalPlatform’s interoperable technology, Calton Hill has also ensured that the solution is compatible with over 75% of devices within the mobile solutions market**, enabling mass market appeal and widespread adoption opportunities for content providers such as film studios and music production companies.

Steve Rooney, CEO of Calton Hill, comments: “SecureSharing is a unique mobile DRM solution which addresses the needs of content developers to secure their content against hackers and piracy, yet which also satisfies consumers by allowing them to view content wherever and whenever they want. As an active member of GlobalPlatform and a long standing advocate of its open and interoperable smart card technology infrastructure, Calton Hill is proud to become the first company to offer a DRM solution based on the GlobalPlatform Specifications. The GPD/STIP device environment is an integral part of the solution, which not only ensures that the confidential content remains totally secure at all times, but also enables this solution to be compatible with the majority of mobile devices in the global market today.”

Bob Beer, Chairman of GlobalPlatform and Vice President of Business Development at Datacard Group, adds: “This is a landmark implementation of GPD/STIP technology, which demonstrates two significant commercial advantages that GlobalPlatform device technology can offer - security and interoperability. Calton Hill has achieved two ‘firsts’ with this launch – using a GPD/STIP application on mobile devices and applying GPD/STIP to a DRM use case scenario. As a GlobalPlatform member, Calton Hill has had a proactive role in the development of GlobalPlatform’s device technology. This latest announcement demonstrates a clear understanding by Calton Hill of the commercial and competitive advantages that can be achieved through the use of GlobalPlatform’s device technology, and illustrates the company’s commitment to deploying GlobalPlatform compliant solutions within the global marketplace.”
