GlobalPlatform News – Board updates from Tokyo, Automotive & upcoming events

Letter from GlobalPlatform’s Executive Director

The GlobalPlatform Board recently gathered in Tokyo for our Board Strategy Meetings. Thanks to the input received from GlobalPlatform members at the Standardization Executive Roundtable, the June Technical Week, and from our annual members survey, the Board were able to engage in vibrant discussions on the strategic direction of GlobalPlatform for the year ahead and beyond. See the update below on the exciting outcomes and stay tuned for more details on the execution of this new strategy. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us at secretariat@globalplatform.org

Next month we’ll be hosting a meeting of our China Task Force on October 24th. This session will explore the latest challenges and concerns impacting the nation. This will be followed later that same day by our Cybersecurity Vehicle Forum Beijing. This week was selected so we could also co-locate with SAE-China Congress & Exhibition 2023. Additional details will be shared very soon, but register now to secure your place.

Later this year, we will be sponsoring the Secure Identity Alliance Interoperability Summit at this year’s TRUSTECH event on Wednesday November 29th in Paris. Please reach out if you want to be involved in the organization and we will share more details soon!

Finally, make sure you are planning to join us for our annual Fall Meetings! We’ll be in Athens from November 6-10 to discuss the technical and strategic priorities for our organisation moving forward, including a joint meeting with ENISA. Members are invited to register.

Tokyo Board Strategy Meetings

Earlier this month we held our annual Board Strategy Meetings in Tokyo. These discussions – led by the insights and input of our members given at our most recent Standardization Executive Roundtable – proved to be a transformative week for GlobalPlatform with stand-out discussions largely relating to our committees. Some key insights from these discussions are as follows:

  • We have created a new SESIP committee to support the adoption and recognition of SESIP as a worldwide, multi-vertical scheme to simplify security evaluation for the whole ecosystem.
  • To ensure we best address the market’s need to build standardized isolated environments in devices we have taken the decision to merge our TEE and TPS Committees.
  • We are developing new working practices and processes for the SE Committee to assist the group in delivering in line with upcoming member requirements as well as industry and regulatory deadlines, such as European Digital Identity (EUDI).
  • We will also be launching a series of regular TechTalks. The short sessions will focus on a technical topic or new idea related to the GlobalPlatform Technical Roadmap, allowing time for discussion and questions.

Cybersecurity Vehicle Forum events

On September 14, 2023, we hosted the third Cybersecurity Vehicle Forum (CSVF) in Tokyo, Japan. The event included participation from DENSO, Mazda, Mitsubishi Electric, Toyota Motor Corporation and more. We are looking forward to continuing the discussion on Japanese requirements for secure components in automotive and are planning to return to Japan next year. Access the event presentations and view a recording here.

The next Cybersecurity Vehicle Forum is being held in Beijing, China on October 24th. This is being organized in coordination with a meeting of the China Task Force and will be held alongside the SAE China Congress and Exhibition. Additionally, we will host a CSVF event on November 14th in Hamburg, Germany, just prior to the ESCAR Europe event.

VIDEO: Trusted Execution Environment; Past and Future

The Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) was created out of a need for a small, secure and independent element to securely place services. It ensures sensitive data is stored, processed, and protected in an isolated and trusted environment. This includes protection against attacks generated in the rest of the device, or other actors inside the TEE.

In our latest video, Don Felton - Principal Security Architect at Trustonic and former Chair of the GlobalPlatform TEE Specification Working Group – explores its history and its future, including the work GlobalPlatform is doing to drive its innovation forward.
