GlobalPlatform News – Updates from Athens, the SIDI Hub Initiative and SESIP training

Letter from GlobalPlatform’s Executive Director

This month, GlobalPlatform members from around the globe came together to discuss and agree on the future of our organization. This collaboration has always been crucial to the success of both GlobalPlatform as an organization and the secure technologies and certifications that we champion. Our Fall Meetings in Athens were testament to the value of this collaboration as we came together to form new committees, define new charters, elect chairs and much more for 2024.

Some of the other outcomes from these meetings include uniting our Security Evaluation Standard for IoT Platforms (SESIP) work under the new SESIP Committee, merging our Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) and Trusted Platform Services (TPS) Committees to form the Trusted Environments & Services (TES) Committee, and future SBOM work is now under the remit of the Security Task Force. Keep an eye out as we communicate on the opportunities these changes create.

Our commitment to China and the wider APAC market continued thanks to our recent meetings in Beijing. The co-located China Task Force meeting and Cybersecurity Vehicle Forum gave members the chance to speak with unique insight into the future of Chinese device security.

We’ll soon be opening registrations for our upcoming SESIP Training, taking place Q1 2024. Open to GlobalPlatform members and non-members alike, this session is designed to support those looking to adopt the methodology as a way to meet the specific compliance, security, privacy, and scalability challenges of the evolving IoT ecosystem. Read below to register interest.

Finally, I hope to see many of you at the upcoming TRUSTECH event in Paris. Our Chief Technology Officer, Gil Bernabeu will join a panel to share insight from the previous day’s Sustainable and Interoperable Digital Identity (SIDI) Summit.

SIDI Hub Initiative

In recognition of the benefits that global interoperability will bring, and the risks posed by the current fragmentated approach, GlobalPlatform joined the major open-standard organizations active on digital identity from around the world to launch a new project - the Sustainable and Interoperable Digital Identity (SIDI) Hub.

By promoting reusability, the SIDI Hub is seeking to drive and operationalize interoperability at scale in the digital identity space, to bolster security and trust in digital interactions and, ultimately, enable a sustainable and inclusive digital future.

China Taks Force Meeting and the CVF Beijing

Last month we hosted parallel meetings of our China Task Force and the Cybersecurity Vehicle Forum (CVF) in Beijing, China.

The China Task Force met to explore GlobalPlatform’s latest work on Secured Application on Mobile (SAM), the SESIP methodology and eID Wallets, speaking on how each of these directly impact the Chinese market.

Meanwhile, the co-located CVF event brought together the automotive value chain with experts on trusted digital services. Discussions focused on addressing the latest developments in the connected vehicle ecosystem and work to futureproof connected services. We’ll be sharing more details on our next CVF meeting in Hamburg soon!

Automotive Initiative Updates

The month of November included a number of automotive initiative activities. At the Fall member meeting in Athens, the Automotive Task Force participated in meetings with SAE and AUTOSAR. As you may be aware, GlobalPlatform has created the mapping of compliance to J3101 (hardware security trust anchors) and SAE has decided to publish it in their next edition of J3101. We are also in discussions with the AUTOSAR Security Working Group and we will be expanding our discussions into the WG-UCM (Update & Configuration Management) and WG-AP-ST (System Tests).

Additionally, we held our final Cybersecurity Vehicle Forum event for 2023 in Hamburg, Germany and we welcomed participation from a number of automotive OEMs including General Motors, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis and Toyota. Over the next few weeks, we will be planning the schedule of Cybersecurity Vehicle Forum events in 2024.

As we wind down the year and move toward 2024, we invite you to join the Automotive Task Force to ensure that your organization’s priorities and requirements are included in GlobalPlatform’s automotive security specifications.
