GlobalPlatform News – ISO/IEC 17065, SESIP and eID Wallets in Europe

Letter from GlobalPlatform’s Executive Director

Registrations are now open for our next Cybersecurity Vehicle Forum, taking place September 14 in Tokyo! Join us to discuss the latest developments in automotive cybersecurity and work together to future proof the next generation of connected services.

Since 2011 Don Felton has been Chair of our TEE Specification Working Group and after 12 outstanding years he has taken the decision to retire. Through his work he has driven understanding and deployment of TEE based security technology since its creation and has been a crucial contributor to multiple GlobalPlatform specifications. Many thanks for your years of service Don, and we hope you enjoy your retirement.

I’d also like to invite all GlobalPlatform members to join us in Athens for our annual Fall Meetings. Taking place November 6-10, we’ll be discussing key initiatives including the Security Evaluation Standard for IoT Platforms (SESIP) methodology, eID Wallet, automotive use cases and more. We will also be having a joint meeting with ENISA the same week. Secure your place now.

To further enhance our SESIP offering, we have launched a training program for labs, product vendors, regulators, and scheme owners. Leveraging the organization’s technical expertise on interoperability standards, this SESIP training provides participants with a thorough understanding of the methodology and how it can be applied.

I am pleased to welcome two new members to GlobalPlatform. Analog Devices Inc. is a global semiconductor provider that combines analog, digital, and software technologies into solutions that help drive innovation and joins us as a Full Member. Digital Cubes, which specializes in providing consulting support for computer certification and qualification solutions for products, joins us a Consultant Member. Welcome to you both!

Finally, keep an eye out for our upcoming Annual Report! This will explore the major initiatives and achievements for GlobalPlatform over the past 12 months and give you a preview into what lies ahead in what promises to be another dynamic year for our organization.

GlobalPlatform & III partner to advance Taiwan’s cybersecurity goals

GlobalPlatform and the Institute for Information Industry (III), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support Taiwan in bolstering digital transformation and enhancing the cyber resilience of its technology supply chains.

The MoU reflects the commitment of Taiwan’s ICT industry to combatting cyberattacks. It will enable GlobalPlatform and III to bring together key stakeholders from across Taiwan’s semiconductor supply chain to facilitate the exchange of security expertise and align on the adoption of internationally recognized standards that combat cybercrime.

This includes aligning local requirements with global cybersecurity regulations through the adoption of GlobalPlatform’s SESIP methodology to create and manage IoT cybersecurity certification schemes.

Register for our SESIP Training Program

GlobalPlatform has enhanced its training program to support stakeholders adopting the Security Evaluation Standard for IoT Platforms (SESIP) methodology. This training course has been designed to improve industry knowledge of the SESIP methodology, security levels, key concepts including composition, and GlobalPlatform’s Governance model.

Two-day in-person training or four half-day virtual sessions are available for:

  • Product vendors, regulators, and scheme owners – grow your understanding of the SESIP methodology, its objectives, applicability to other standards and GlobalPlatform Governance rules.
  • Labs – learn how to implement the evaluation methodology to support your SESIP projects and provide an efficient and swift solution for IoT device certification.

Securing the IoT: SESIP or Common Criteria? That is not the question

There has long been a debate among the security community about the commonalities and differences between SESIP and Common Criteria standards. Experts have asked which is the correct methodology to use for IoT developers and device makers when securing the IoT ecosystem?

However, IoT Certification Expert at NXP, Carlos Serratos, disagrees that the two must be mutually exclusive. He argues that the two in fact work harmoniously to enhance security evaluation. Read his latest article to find out how.

Automotive Initiative Update

Following our meeting with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in April, GlobalPlatform and the Automotive Task Force has created a draft annotated mapping of how both GlobalPlatform SEs and TEEs support the J3101 requirements. This annotated mapping is planned for discussion in SAE in August.

After a successful Cybersecurity Vehicle Forum last month, we are now preparing for events in Tokyo (Sept. 14th), Beijing (Oct. 27th) and Hamburg (Nov. 14th) as well as a virtual update on September 25th. See the event listings here.

Finally, we are in the process of gathering input to plan our automotive initiative priorities for 2023/2024. We are seeking contributions from automotive specialists to support the priorities that we will present to the Board in September. Please contact automotive@globalplatform.org to participate in planning for 2023/2024.

New Document Releases

We are pleased to announce the publication of the microcontroller Root of Trust (MCU RoT) Protection Profile v1.0. This document defines the security requirements for an architecture-neutral MCU RoT which enables IoT-oriented security services such as attestation, device authentication, and personal data protection. This gives device manufacturers a new tool to help them select the right level of security for their IoT device.
