Letter from GlobalPlatform’s Executive Director

I hope all those of you celebrating the festive period had a wonderful break with family and friends.

As we head into 2022, GlobalPlatform is looking forward to another strong year of collaboration, advancing technologies and certifications that bring trust and privacy to connected industries and lay the foundations for innovation.

This includes our work to secure the IoT. GlobalPlatform has over 20 years’ experience in establishing and managing certification schemes and is preparing to launch a new training program to enable laboratories to conduct evaluations in line with the Security Evaluation Standard for IoT Platforms (SESIP). SESIP delivers a flexible and efficient security evaluation methodology dedicated to addressing the complexity of the IoT ecosystem and supports a broad range of regulatory and security frameworks. We are currently looking for industry experts to deliver these training sessions. If you are interested in becoming a GlobalPlatform-certified trainer, please contact me at ana.lattibeaudiere@globalplatform.org

In parallel, GlobalPlatform is looking for speakers and sponsors for a SESIP Workshop which will be co-located with the Spring Meetings, taking place April 11-14 in Austin, Texas. We are also seeking member contributions for our Software Bill of Materials and Automotive initiatives, which we will be sharing more details on in the coming months. Please reach out to me if you would like to participate in any of these initiatives.

Finally, a reminder that the GlobalPlatform and Winbond workshop on ‘Certified Trust’ has been moved to August. You can read more on this below and register to attend here.

Become a SESIP Laboratory Trainer

As part of its commitment to supporting the IoT device security certification ecosystem, GlobalPlatform is launching a SESIP training scheme for laboratories. The objective is to build consistency across IoT certification schemes to facilitate product evaluation and certificate recognition. Laboratories can work with GlobalPlatform to improve the SESIP methodology and associated supporting documents to provide an efficient and swift solution for IoT device certification.

We will be hosting classes for those interested in becoming a GlobalPlatform-certified SESIP trainer in February and March. These classes will equip participants with the requisite knowledge and skills to lead the laboratory training sessions later in the year. Please get in touch if you are interested in becoming a trainer.

SESIP Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Our FAQ document provides answers to many common questions regarding the SESIP methodology, and the benefits for product developers and issuers. SESIP certificates provide reusable evidence that security requirements are covered by a device component that is not manufactured by the IoT vendor.

The document has been designed to help product developers and issuers understand what a SESIP security certificate is for, why it is important, and how they can benefit from it. Conforming to this methodology can be used as part of demonstrating compliance to an IoT device standard, providing reusable evidence that security requirements are covered by the device.

‘Certified Trust’ Workshop Rescheduled for August

GlobalPlatform and Prime Sponsor Winbond have rescheduled the ‘IoT Security and Ecosystem Workshop: Certified Trust’. The event will now take place in August 2022, a decision that has been taken due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. We hope that by moving to this later date we will be able to welcome as many in-person attendees as possible.

We hope those of you that had planned to attend the workshop will still be able to join us, and for those yet to confirm, the workshop website remains open for registrations. Further details will be provided in due course. We look forward to seeing you there!

GlobalPlatform’s MUD File Service

GlobalPlatform’s Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) File Service aims to simplify and secure IoT device network onboarding and management, to facilitate convenient and secure device connectivity.

Manufacturers can use the free service to publish, in a unique location, the MUD file library associated with their products. Publication in the MUD File Service simplifies the access and consumption of MUD files from networks hosting these devices. Enabling manufacturers to share the intent, capabilities and requirements of their devices in this way eases onboarding and network management, and helps network managers manage the rapidly growing number, and types, of IoT devices in their environments safely and efficiently.

White Paper: SESIP Applicability for ETSI EN 303 645

Back in July, GlobalPlatform achieved ISO 17065 accreditation demonstrating it has state-of-the-art certification processes in place for its functional, SE security and TEE security schemes.

In the latest blog from our insight series Technical Director, Gil Bernabeu, explains how the accreditation adds value to device makers and vendors by positioning GlobalPlatform to address future challenges, and evolve its certifications as connected device types and regulatory practices advance.
