February 2021 Newsletter

Letter from GlobalPlatform’s Executive Director

Moving into February and 2021 has already kicked off to a fast start at GlobalPlatform. Coming up in the first part of the year we have virtual workshops covering IoT device onboarding and the use of SEs in IoT. The China Task Force is also preparing a live workshop which we have updates on below.

In addition, last month saw the announcement of the latest shipment figures for SEs and TEEs in the form of a blog from Technical Director Gil Bernabeu, discussing the evolution of secure component technology to serve newly connected markets and use cases.

As we move through the first part of the year it’s also time to remind members to save the date for our All-Member Spring Meeting which take place virtually on March 30.

Save the date: ‘SE for IoT’ Workshop

Our upcoming virtual workshop which will discuss the use of Secure Element technologies to secure IoT solutions, will take place between April 13-15.

During the workshop, contributors will share use cases and demonstrations showcasing the value of Secure Elements (SEs) to secure and enrich the deployment and management of IoT devices built on a secure Root of Trust (RoT). Contributors will include Oracle, Thales, STMicroelectronics and Able Device.

Topics covered include GlobalPlatform SEs; multi-cloud authentication and communication using Java Card; on-boarding technologies; device connectivity based on SIM application engines; GSMA’s IoT SAFE service; tamper-resistant elements; and attestation.

We will keep you up to date on further details, including registration which will be available soon.

IoT Device Secure Onboarding Solutions Workshop

On March 17, GlobalPlatform will present a live workshop on the topic of secure onboarding solutions for IoT devices.

The workshop will involve contributions sharing the current market status on industry approaches and defining priorities for deployment of secure services in components and devices, and in the management infrastructure of the associated protocols related to device onboarding.

Confirmed contributors and topics include:

  • Steve Hanna (Infineon) exploring Zigbee and their CHIP initiative.
  • Geoffrey Cooper (Intel) presenting on Intel SDO and FIDO Alliance.
  • Michael Richardson (consultant) discussing BRSKI.
  • Peter Steinhäuser (consultant) providing general onboarding insights.
  • Tim Polk (NIST) offering a federal government perspective.

We look forward to welcoming delegates to this interesting and educational workshop.

Insight series: Evolution of Secure Components

The latest installation of the GlobalPlatform Insights series comes from Technical Director Gil Bernabeu, who discusses the evolution of secure component technologies and recent adoption.

Secure Elements (SEs) provide a tamper resistant platform and Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) offer a secure area within a device. These technologies protect keys, applications and data, and devices across a wide range of use cases.

As IoT has expanded in recent years and new use cases within existing industries continue to be adopted, secure component technologies are also evolving to serve the changing needs of the rapidly evolving connected ecosystem.
