Letter from GlobalPlatform’s Executive Director

This month, GlobalPlatform held its annual Spring Meetings in Austin. It was wonderful to meet so many of you in person to join engaging discussions on the technologies shaping our industry and priorities for our organisation which you can read more about below.

Alongside the Spring Meetings, we were pleased to be joined by stakeholders from throughout the IoT ecosystem for a workshop exploring the value of the Security Evaluation Standard for IoT Platforms (SESIP) Methodology. I would like to thank our fantastic line-up of speakers for sharing their insights and experiences on how SESIP is reducing complexity, cost and time-to-market in security evaluation, as well as our sponsors SGS Brightsight, Winbond and STMicroelectronics, and supporting partners ABI Research, Secure Technology Alliance and Trusted Connectivity Alliance for their support.

We’ll soon publish a blog with a summary of key highlights and insights from the workshop, and watch out for a series of video interviews with industry leaders discussing the key trends and security considerations for their markets.

Thank you for attending our Spring Meetings and SESIP workshop

The Spring Meetings in Austin provided an opportunity for our committees and task forces to meet and discuss the technical initiatives they are driving forward this coming year. The meetings kicked off with an update from the IoTopia task force, whose include addressing 5G device security and Software Bill of Materials (SBOM). Other highlights from task force sessions included the Security Task Force’s discussion on post quantum technology, cryptography and the SESIP methodology.

Also on the agenda at the Spring Meetings were the technical committee meetings. Key topics here included the Secure Element Committee’s discussion of GSMA’s Secure Application on Mobile (SAM) and the TEE committee’s deep dive into the TEE Core API. The Trusted Platform Services Committee also met to discuss SERAM, open source and TPS API development.

GlobalPlatform’s committees and task forces drive the development of standards that accelerate the adoption of new technologies and deliver convenient and trusted digital services and devices across markets, and I encourage all members to consider how they can get involved with these efforts.

BLOG: Mapping edge computing standards to SESIP

As the number and types of IoT devices grows rapidly, the number of security incidents involving IoT products is rising in parallel. These incidents erode consumer trust, which is a major inhibiting factor to the deployment of billions of IoT devices in the coming years.

Our latest blog by Carlos Serratos, Vice Chair of the GlobalPlatform Security Task Force, explains how Microsoft is mapping edge computing standards to the Security Evaluation Standard for IoT Platforms (SESIP) to simplify the work of IoT developers, by providing guidance on how to holistically engineer and claim device security, as well on how to consume and verify device security claims.

BLOG: ‘Better together’ – Collaboration for a secure IoT ecosystem

Unlocking the full potential of IoT connectivity, data and devices, requires a new ecosystem of security certification. We need to align the efforts being made by each actor in the value chain - vendors, laboratories, certification bodies and regulators – for IoT security certification to truly be effective.

Our Technical Director, Gil Bernabeu discusses why collaboration is better than competition when it comes to the important issues of security and certification and discusses two initiatives gaining momentum – the Security Evaluation Standard for IoT Platforms (SESIP) methodology and PSA Certified – and outlines SESIP’s value to other IoT schemes, vendors and laboratories.

Mobile century article

I was honored to feature in the 30th edition of Mobile Century Magazine (a publication from the Global Telecoms Women Network), explaining how industry collaboration can achieve true scale and affordability for the IoT.

While industries have successfully addressed early obstacles, the inconvenient truth is that security and privacy considerations are now the biggest barriers to IoT adoption. In the race to connect and innovate, security and privacy considerations are overlooked, under-prioritized or not well understood and, as a result, international and regional regulations are tightening. How can we address these hurdles to realize the potential of IoT benefits?
