Samsung S1 Joins GlobalPlatform

22 September 2006 - Samsung S1 Corporation joins GlobalPlatform, the world leader in smart card infrastructure development and deployment, in its mission to accelerate smart card industry growth through standardization.

Samsung S1 Corporation, an affiliated company of the Samsung Group, is Korea’s largest total security system provider and smart card player, committed to the development of EMV compliant products that meet both Korean and global market requirements.

Driven by 50 cross-industry Member organizations, GlobalPlatform captures and orchestrates the business and technical interests of the international community to ensure a universal approach in the development of state of the art standards for cards, acceptance devices, and systems infrastructure. Joining GlobalPlatform as a Participating Member, Samsung S1 will actively contribute to the development of interoperable standards for single and multi-application smart cards, through involvement in GlobalPlatform’s Technical Committees.

The participation of Samsung S1 strengthens GlobalPlatform’s presence in the Financial and Government markets. Currently, Samsung S1 smart card deployments account for 60 per cent of the financial sector in Korea. A key aim for Samsung S1 is to support the rapid expansion of migration to smart cards in the Asia Pacific region. Their product portfolio currently includes low cost smart cards for financial sector, as well as Java platforms based on GlobalPlatform Specifications.

With an equally strong focus on the dynamic Government sector, Samsung S1 specializes in applications for security and authentication, and has a roadmap in place to develop GlobalPlatform compliant solutions for e-Passport implementations and, eventually, electronic voting systems.

For Samsung S1, Membership in GlobalPlatform will give greater visibility to the company and its marketing and business development efforts, and above all, the opportunity to directly contribute to the world-wide standards for smart card infrastructure.
