GLOBALPLATFORM ANNOUNCES NEW BOARD OFFICERS

GlobalPlatform, the cross-industry multiple application smart card association, has named its new Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary/Treasurer following the recent Board Officer elections which took place at the organisation’s Board meeting in early November.

Jerry Johnson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Datacard Group and existing Board Member of GlobalPlatform has been named as the new Chair of GlobalPlatform while Jim Lee, Senior Vice President Emerging Technologies at Visa International retains his position as Vice Chair for a second term. Gilles Michel, President, Financial and Security Services at Gemplus takes on the role of Secretary / Treasurer. All three Officers have been elected to serve a one-year term.

In October 2002, the new GlobalPlatform Board for 2003 was named. In total, eleven nominations were received for the six Board seats being re-elected, showing a healthy interest in the future strategic direction of GlobalPlatform. Three of the six seats went to incumbents: Toshiaki Kuzuki of JCB, Shoichi Senda of NTT and Jim Lee of Visa International. GlobalPlatform also welcomed three new members to its Board; Christian Jûttner of Giesecke & Devrient, Carmen Carnero-Silvo of SERMEPA S.A. and Verina Horsnell of Sun Microsystems.

Jerry Johnson, Chair of GlobalPlatform, comments: “ Being named as Chair of GlobalPlatform at such an exciting time in its growth is an opportunity that I positively welcome. My predecessor, Steve Brown, did an excellent job of making GlobalPlatform a leading industry body, recognised for driving the development of a common infrastructure for smart card growth. With a strong, established technical base now in place, I intend to leverage this base through an increased marketing focus on the leadership efforts of the organisation to help increase the adoption of GlobalPlatform specifications across different sectors and diverse geographies.

“We have an excellent Board in place to steer the organisation through 2003, in addition to the dedicated and enthusiastic Committee Chairs, who are leaders in their fields and are responsible for driving the technical work of the organisation. With membership at an all time high and further adoption of GlobalPlatform Specifications on the rise, GlobalPlatform is currently stronger than ever and continually growing in its world-wide influence. I look forward to assuming my responsibilities as Chair with immediate effect.”
