CANADIAN SMART CARD ORGANISATIONS COME TOGETHER FOR GLOBALPLATFORM BUSINESS SEMINAR IN TORONTO

GlobalPlatform - the cross-industry global smart card organisation - in association with Scotiabank, is organising a one-day business seminar in Toronto on Wednesday August 21, 2002. The event, which will take place at the Metro Toronto Convention Center on Front Street West, aims to explore the business and technical benefits - and challenges - of adopting multi-application smart cards and systems within the Canadian market place.

The seminar will open with Michele D'Auray, Chief Informatics Officer of the Canadian Federal Government, delivering the keynote speech on Smart Cards Policy. Delegates will subsequently be invited to attend a number of presentations that focus on visions and strategies for multi-application smart cards, by sharing the experiences of many industry-renowned smart card issuers, solution and device suppliers and systems and communications companies.

Attendees at the event will have the opportunity to meet the Board Directors of GlobalPlatform and its Business and Technical Directors, and to take advantage of their respective industry knowledge, combined expertise and practical experience of multiple application smart cards.

GlobalPlatform Specifications are fast becoming the industry standard for advancing smart card growth and the seminar aims to engage more Canadian organisations to become involved with GlobalPlatform and to take part in steering its technical and strategic Committees forward in a way that reflects the requirements of the Canadian market place.

Steve Brown, Chairman of GlobalPlatform and Head of Business Development (Messaging and Security) at BT Ignite, comments: "While GlobalPlatform already has a strong presence in the Canadian market through Scotiabank and other leading Member organisations that operate there, it is vital that we maintain and grow this support if we want to continue advancing towards a global infrastructure for multiple application smart card development.

"The business seminar is designed not only to be beneficial to delegates in terms of the knowledge that is shared, but to encourage more Canadian organisations to become involved in driving GlobalPlatform forward. We will welcome new Members and look forward to the benefits their membership will bring to the organisation"

"Scotiabank has been a leader in the on-going research and development of smart card technology in Canada for a number of years and we are delighted to be part of GlobalPlatform and this important business seminar that explores the global perspective of the future of smart card technology," says Ed Lomax, Director of Merchant Products, Scotiabank, who will be moderating the GlobalPlatform business seminar.

High profile speakers will be attending from leading international organisations including BT Ignite, Datacard Group, Ingenico, Interac, MasterCard International, NBS Technologies, Thales e-Security, US Department of Defense and Visa International.
