Trusted Open Source Silicon Task Force

The Trusted Open Source Silicon Task Force is chaired by Dominic Rizzo from zeroRISC. All GlobalPlatform members are eligible to participate in this group.

Mission

The purpose of the Task Force is to establish a permissively licensed open-source silicon distribution that appropriately balances commercial and community needs to support the broadest possible ecosystem, accelerate adoption of security standards, and increase implementation trustworthiness.

The primary focus of the Task Force is to engage with commercial partners and community contributors to establish a versatile, high-quality open silicon Distribution that is secure-by-design and compatible with relevant certification schemes by default.

Objectives

  • Propose to the Board the establishment of separate administrative and technical governance committees:
    • Drafting and approval of charters for each of those committees;
    • Setting up any structures and legal agreements to support those committees;
    • Asking the Board to establish the form of the relationship between the administrative and technical governance committees;
  • Support the adoption of GlobalPlatform standards by:
    • Establishing working relationships between the Task Force and any relevant GlobalPlatform Technical Committees and Task Forces;
    • Defining synergies between the Distribution and existing or forthcoming GlobalPlatform efforts;
    • Establishing a process for the Distribution to support configurations compatible with GlobalPlatform standards as part of secure-by-design principles;
  • Establishing a legal framework for the Distribution aligned open source best practices:
    • Selection of a permissive open source license;
    • Evaluation and selection of contributor requirements;
    • Applying best practices for open source copyright and associated trademark(s);
  • Definition and documentation of a Distribution working model to apply open source development norms to silicon development;
  • Definition of a regular release process and configuration management to sustainably support certification-compatible configurations;
  • Enumeration of technical collateral to support the Open Source
  • Drafting and proposing to the Board an initial budget to support the open source project and strategy, including clear articulation of costs and outcomes;
  • Defining a strategy to support community ecosystem growth and project commercial adoption. This includes marketing, standards body engagement beyond GlobalPlatform (NIST, Common Criteria or other International or Regional Organizations) and hosting workshops or trainings.

Deliverables

The deliverables of the Task Force consist of strategy and marketing plans, ecosystem development activities, and white papers that provide the necessary support to the defined objectives.

The Task Force will determine the most pertinent results and core messaging for the marketing outreach.
