This new version of the Next Gen APDU Transport specification integrates support for the T=1' protocol over the ISO 7816 and I3C interfaces, as well as a change to the T=1' protocol itself regarding the encoding of the NAD byte. It also introduces changes in terminologies, many clarifications and changes to default values, and describes optimizations that may be implemented in a production environment.

This new specification defines interfaces for a Secure Element different from ISO/IEC 7816-3. It specifies how to transfer APDUs between a Hosting Device and a Secure Element using serial physical interfaces based on SPI or I2C. Such interfaces are required by new use cases for the Internet of Things (IoT), and in the Mobile and Wearable industries.
