GlobalPlatform July Newsletter – Annual Report, China Roadshow and SCP 70

Letter from GlobalPlatform’s Executive Director

As GlobalPlatform’s fiscal year 2022 comes to an end, we will soon be publishing our annual report. This will celebrate the key achievements of our organization and outline the new initiatives we are now driving. The report will be accompanied by your membership renewal invoice for fiscal year 2023. You can read more on this below.

Thank you to all those who attended our recent China Task Force Roadshow on July 28. It was wonderful to engage with stakeholders, present our global roadmap and discuss regional priorities in China. If you want to know more or get involved in the future China Taskforce activities, please reach out to me at ana.lattibeaudiere@globalplatform.org or to Harry Wang at hw@globalplatform.org

Stay tuned for more information on our upcoming workshop in Barcelona on the Security Evaluation Standard for IoT Platforms (SESIP). Taking place after our SESIP technical meetings on October 17 and 18,  we invite you to join our workshop on October 19 to explore SESIP from the vantage point of European markets. We will share details on how to secure your place soon. Please also keep an eye out for details about a GlobalPlatform Taiwan Workshop.

Annual Report and Membership Renewal

We will soon be publishing our annual report which will reflect on the many exciting developments GlobalPlatform has made in the last 12 months, and the opportunities ahead as we work to build standards that benefit everyone.

This includes new initiatives to facilitate interoperability of secure applications and digital identity, navigate the introduction of GSMA’s Secured Application for Mobile (SAM), provide guidance on migration to Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) and work with the automotive industry to address new security standards.

The annual report will be accompanied by a letter inviting you to renew your membership for fiscal year 2023. I would like to thank you for your continued support and valued contributions and hope you will continue to participate in our community to help define the building blocks for the future of security.

SESIP Workshop Barcelona

Following the success of our workshop in Austin earlier this year, GlobalPlatform is hosting a second workshop on the SESIP methodology in Barcelona on October 19.

The workshop will take place after our technical meetings on October 17 and 18 to explore the benefits that SESIP can bring to IoT device makers and certification bodies in European markets, as well as how it addresses more global concerns of security, privacy and scalability for stakeholders throughout the IoT ecosystem.

Stay tuned for more information on how to secure your place in the coming weeks.

New Member Workspace

Our new member workspace has launched. You should have received an email last month announcing the migration from the current member-only website to a new ‘Higher Logic Community Workspace’ platform.

The new community site includes all of the same document management, collaboration and consensus tools currently used, as well as new group discussion and event features. Several tutorial videos are available to help members navigate the new workspace and unlock the full benefit of the features available.

Join New GlobalPlatform Initiatives

GlobalPlatform invites members with an interest in the European Digital Identity Wallet to participate in the creation of a new digital identity task force. The group will analyze the implications of the EU scheme, and we are currently in the process of scheduling a kick-off meeting to define the charter.

Discussions around our new Automotive Task Force are also underway. We are gathering feedback from our members and Automotive stakeholders to shape the charter for GlobalPlatform’s remit.

If you would like to learn more about participating in either of these initiatives, please contact me.

Blog: Delivering IoT Security to Constrained Devices

The demand for smaller, more efficient IoT devices to meet a growing variety of use cases, has risen dramatically in recent years. Resource constrained devices fill this demand but do so at the expense of battery power and some of the more advanced communication capabilities.

In our latest blog, GlobalPlatform-member, Pascal Dumas, of IDEMIA explains how GlobalPlatform’s new Secure Channel Protocol 70 (SCP 70) is delivering value to the resource constrained IoT device ecosystem. SCP 70 is designed to provide end-to-end and bearer-independent authenticated encryption of messages for low power, long range devices.

Specifications Under Review

This new specification provides a generalization of the Secure Channel Protocol ‘03’, which allows using other block ciphers than AES and other modes for encryption and MACing, including AEAD modes. It is a first step towards crypto agility which is relevant for introducing quantum safe crypto algorithms.

This document has been made available for public review. Please provide comments by Friday September 30, 2022.
