GlobalPlatform Welcomes RATP To Its Membership

27 March 2008 – The French urban transport operator, Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP), has joined international smart card specifications body, GlobalPlatform. The membership demonstrates RATP’s commitment to developing and implementing standardized and globally interoperable transportation applications which encourage mass market adoption of technology solutions such as e-ticketing.

Mr Michel Barjansky , spokesperson for RATP, explains: “The RATP network carries over 2.5 billion passengers every year and has invested in providing its customers with innovative e-ticketing solutions. Its most well known implementation – Navigo – is based on Calypso. Calypso, an open standard for contactless transaction, is mostly applied today to ticketing in Europe, and isdesigned and promoted by public transport operators. The next phase of the Navigo deployment, based on Calypso revision 03, is to progress from the current card centric solution to a standardized multi-application infrastructure. To meet this technology requirement, RATP will be adopting GlobalPlatform Specifications, and as such, believed it is important to be part of the organization’s technology development moving forward.”

The second generation Navigo program will provide a dynamic post issuance application management framework by offering Over-The-Air and Over-The-Internet application download capabilities. The advanced infrastructure will also allow RATP to be form factor independent, enabling customers to use cards, SIM or chips set into a device such as a mobile phone or contactless USB token, to manage their e-ticketing account, and other applications in the future .

Bob Beer, Chairman of GlobalPlatform and Vice President of Business Development at Datacard Group, comments: “We are delighted that RATP has joined GlobalPlatform, and will share its knowledge and wealth of experience in deploying smart technology within the transportation sector. GlobalPlatform’s Technical Committees are also looking forward to supporting RATP in its adoption of GlobalPlatform technology to ensure the successful transition of the Navigo implementation into its next phase.”

RATP joins GlobalPlatform as a Public Entity Member and will be entitled to contribute to GlobalPlatform’s business and technical discussions by participating in the organization’s Advisory Council. This forum also offers updates into the work of GlobalPlatform’s Card, Device and System Committees, which will allow RATP to stay abreast of the latest technology advances, while having an opportunity to highlight the areas that RATP would like to be addressed that are specific to the transportation sector.
