GlobalPlatform Launches TSM Seminar

Free to attend seminar will address how the NFC mobile marketplace can achieve a common, global framework to ensure the secure delivery of mobile NFC services

17 April 2013 - Industry body GlobalPlatform is inviting actors operating in the mobile near field communication (NFC) services space to attend a free seminar on Tuesday 18 June in Madrid, Spain. The inaugural event will share best practice guidance on how the marketplace can deliver global consistency and clear communication, when managing NFC secure applications in an international roaming environment.

GlobalPlatform, the association which standardizes the management of applications on secure chip technology, has published industry specifications that define 'who' is responsible for 'what' within the NFC ecosystem and agrees the messaging (i.e. the language used to exchange information) that will be used. This enables the NFC mobile marketplace to make the required communication exchanges across different business models and engage with a range of actors, to provide the end-user with secure services on the secure element (SE) and, in the near future, the trusted execution environment (TEE).

The seminar, entitled 'GlobalPlatform Presents the TSM of Today and Tomorrow', will be of interest to TSMs, mobile network operators (MNOs), banks, transit authorities and technology providers who are engaged in the deployment of mobile services. It will provide delegates with an introduction to the GlobalPlatform Specifications that are relevant to actors in the NFC mobile space and a practical insight into how these can be implemented using real-world use cases and through technology demonstrations.

The session will also share details of how the GSMA, which represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide, has put GlobalPlatform Specifications into practice with the publication of its 'Business Process Implementation Guidelines using GlobalPlatform Protocols'. The document sets out a framework for MNOs to reach full interoperability with GlobalPlatform protocols.

"As our membership incorporates a board range of industry players, we are well placed to develop best practice that reflects the technical requirements of the NFC ecosystem," explains Kevin Gillick, GlobalPlatform Executive Director. "GlobalPlatform's work to support organizations delivering mobile NFC services is the first real global direction the community has had to achieve an international framework. This level of support is being well received and it is great to see standard bodies, such as GSMA, using our common messaging as a basis to develop business processes unique to their market."

During the seminar, GlobalPlatform will also share details of its new initiative to create End-To-End Frameworks; guidelines that provide a holistic view of exactly what is required on the card, device and system to deploy secure NFC mobile services that align with GlobalPlatform Specifications. These will be developed from the service provider perspective for individual markets including banking, transit and government. The framework will aim to reduce implementation costs and speed up development of a trusted and compliant mobile services ecosystem.

Kevin continues: "The frameworks aim to support new service providers or issuers in deploying implementations faster, by using a simple and pre-customized model. Creating an end-to-end framework which defines how each element of an NFC deployment connects with each other and to the backend office is the final piece of the jigsaw. It brings the whole solution together and shows how GlobalPlatform truly supports the full lifecycle of secure applications in a simple deployment environment."

The seminar is being sponsored by GlobalPlatform members Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre - Real Casa de la Moneda (FNMT-RCM), FIME, Galitt and Giesecke & Devrient (G&D). Concluding, Kevin adds: "As an industry association, the support of our members is crucial to enable us to deliver these informative events. I would like to thank our current sponsors for committing resources to this seminar."
