GlobalPlatform Launches IP Connectivity Task Force

02 June 2010 - International specification body for smart card infrastructure, GlobalPlatform, has launched an IP Connectivity Task Force.  Created in response to the increasing demand for personal and consumer IP technology, the task force will work to ensure that GlobalPlatform's Specifications and Configurations support and drive the future integration of smart card technology with the IP landscape.

The new task force will bring GlobalPlatform members together to discuss new business requirements for network-capable objects, and identify how GlobalPlatform technology can progress to meet these advancements.  GlobalPlatform's Technical Committees will aim to align the association's offering with the vision of the task force, and create an environment that will encourage technology developers to capitalize on the smart card's ability to connect with IP-based infrastructures, also known as the ‘Internet of Things'.

The launch of the task force follows the release late last year of the GlobalPlatform Card Networked Framework v1.0, which enables a smart card to securely, effectively and intuitively connect to the web.  GlobalPlatform has also documented a variety of ways to upgrade a smart card program to facilitate IP network connectivity to ensure it accommodates a range of implementer requirements in Amendment B to Card Specification v2.2, which was issued in 2008.

Sebastian Hans, a member of the GlobalPlatform Board of Directors, has been appointed Chair of the GlobalPlatform IP Connectivity Task Force.  He comments: “The internet is a vital tool in delivering exciting and interactive services to end-users, and it is critical that GlobalPlatform's Specifications can interact and support its evolution.  By setting up the IP Connectivity Task Force, GlobalPlatform will be able to build on its significant contribution to this marketplace, and by sharing its wealth of expertise, support a rapid migration of smart cards to IP connected environments.  We believe that this will provide GlobalPlatform technology users with the ideal platform to develop new services and sustainable commercial partnerships.”
