Bell ID’S GSA Approved Card & Management System Uses Card Specification V2.1.1

5 June 2008 – GlobalPlatform has announced that its Card Specification v2.1.1 has been used by smart card and application solution provider Bell ID in its ANDiS4FIPS201 Card and Application Management technology. The solution has recently been placed on the United States (US) Government’s General Services Administration (GSA) Approved Products List in recognition of its compliance with the FIPS 201: Electronic Personalization standard.

Bell ID ’s ANDiS4FIPS201 is an electronic card personalization product which meets the requirements stipulated by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to generate and load the Personal Identity Verification (PIV) technology on government issued ID cards. The highly scalable solution offers US government agencies a card and application system to manage the complete PIV card lifecycle, and uses GlobalPlatform Card Specification v2.1.1 to ensure the interoperability of the cards across different markets, and reduce the development time of individual implementations.

Erik Vermeer, Technical Director at Bell ID, highlights the important role of GlobalPlatform technology within the solution: "By issuing cards that are compliant with GlobalPlatform Card Specification v2.1.1, Bell ID can provide assurances to its customers that ANDiS4FIPS201 will be both scalable and flexible to future market demands and further regulator requirements. It also ensures that Bell ID can offer swift and seamless integration of the cards with other components of the PIV card and issuing infrastructure."

Bob Beer, Chairman of GlobalPlatform and Vice President of Business Development at Datacard Group, adds: "As the international smart card specifications body, GlobalPlatform has developed an open infrastructure which facilitates interoperability across vendors regardless of the industry sector. The scalability of GlobalPlatform Specifications are particularly appealing to government agencies deploying smart card implementations, as the technology is established and can accommodate unknown developments such as providing a common framework for future public and private sector initiatives. As GlobalPlatform Specifications are already ‘live’ within the market, using the technology can simplify and accelerate the rate of new application development while reducing cost through the purchase of ‘open’ solutions from vendors.

"We are delighted that Bell ID has utilised GlobalPlatform card technology within its ANDiS4FIPS201 solution and look forward to seeing its on-going deployment within the market."
