GlobalPlatform for the Future of Security
The dramatic increase of connected devices outside smartphones brings new security and privacy challenges that GlobalPlatform is ideally positioned to address.
The secure component industry has changed. This is partially due to the industry’s success at demonstrating its value to smartphones, tablets and other connected devices, and also because of the much-anticipated rise of the internet of things (IoT).
GlobalPlatform is changing in parallel with the evolving market requirements. Achieving critical mass of GlobalPlatform-certified secure components in smartphones is a major success that all of our members and partners should be proud of, but our work is not complete. The dramatic increase of connected devices outside smartphones brings new security and privacy challenges that GlobalPlatform is ideally positioned to address.
GlobalPlatform’s role is to foster collaborative and open ecosystems, in which all stakeholders can efficiently deliver innovative digital services while providing greater security, privacy, simplicity and convenience for users.
This is an evolution, not a revolution: our core principles remain the same. Our work to protect digital services by standardizing and certifying the security hardware/firmware combinations, known as secure components, continues. This collaboration between service providers and device manufacturers gives them what they need to ensure appropriate, nuanced security within all devices to protect against threats and enhance digital services.
As GlobalPlatform continues to develop specifications that enable an ever-increasing variety of devices to be protected and securely managed throughout their lifecycle – including smartphones, tablets, set top boxes, smart cards, wearables, connected cars and other IoT devices – we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our members and partners for their continued participation, technology contributions and use cases.
