Deploying GlobalPlatform Specifications within financial smart card programs can:

  • Facilitate migration to EMV by providing a cost effective and open infrastructure
  • Enable the issuer or approved third parties to download further value-added applications to payment cards post-issuance
  • Protect the issuer's investment by 'future-proofing' the program against business decisions which have not been made at the time of deployment. GlobalPlatform's flexible and scalable infrastructure can accommodate significant changes to the program post-issuance.

Financial Implementations:

Holland Heineken House at the Beijing Olympics
In 2008, Holland Heineken House, the entertainment venue for the Dutch sporting world at Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, selected Blue Bamboo and KuaiPay as partners to design and integrate a wireless and contactless payment network to support their hospitality and merchant requirements. The aim of the project was for ensure simple, secure and speedy transactions, by requiring all visitors to purchase a prepaid contactless card as a universal payment method for all bars, restaurant, shops and club within the venue.

Blue Bamboo provided the GlobalPlatform based payment terminals – H50 terminal - required for purchasing prepaid cards, ‘topping up’ and making wireless transactions. It also established and managed the Bluetooth™ wireless network to ensure transactions could be undertaken securely to cover the 75,000 square meters of the venue floor space.

Blue Bamboo’s solution for Holland Heineken House used GlobalPlatform device technology – the GPD/STIP Specification – which delivers a highly secure environment for security conscious applications to reside side-by-side with other applications on a device. The H50 terminal was suitable for this deployment because the prepaid card combined payment, contactless and top-up applications. The flexibility offered by a GlobalPlatform device environment enables further functionality to be added in the future.

Blue Bamboo has developed all its products and solutions based on GlobalPlatform Specifications. Blue Bamboo’s H50 is the first EMV and Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standards certified point of sale (POS) terminal adopting GlobalPlatform technology.

Giesecke & Devrient Commonwealth Bank of Australia
In 2007 the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) issued it cardholders with MasterCard PayPass cards, becoming the first financial organization in Australia to pioneer dual interface EMV technology. PayPass enables cardholders to make payments using both contact and contactless technology.

Based on GlobalPlatform's interoperable multi-application card technology and building on the global EMV smart card standard, the MasterCard PayPass card - which is supplied by Giesecke and Devrient - enables its holder to quickly and conveniently purchase low value goods and services at outlets where contactless payment terminals have been installed by merchants.

As the operator of the largest financial services distribution network in the country with a significant customer base, CBA has set a precedent for innovative payment solutions for consumers and merchants.

Beijing Transit Card Contactless Micro-Payments Scheme
KPay, a Beijing-based service provider responsible for setting up a point of sale (POS) network for Beijing contactless transit card top-up and retail payment in 2006, sought POS terminals to support its existing multi-application environment that enabled prepaid, loyalty and contactless payment. In June 2007 it partnered with Blue Bamboo to integrate contactless IC technology into the Blue Bamboo H50 GPRS Terminal. The purpose of the collaboration was to provide a POS solution that could be deployed into local convenience stores that accepted Beijing transit cards for 'tap-and-go' retail purchases cost-effectively.

This solution uses GlobalPlatform device technology – the GPD/STIP Specification – as the software platform. By complying with the GPD/STIP Specification, the terminal enables multiple applications to reside securely side-by-side on a device. This allows increased return on investment as additional programs such as gift, loyalty, financial payment etc are added to the existing deployed infrastructure.

As of November 2007, 15 million transit cards issued by Beijing Municipal Administration & Communication Card Co. Ltd. for use in the subway, buses and taxis were being accepted for 'tap-and-go' retail purchases at various outlets across the city including supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, drug stores and theatres. It is estimated that 2,000 Blue Bamboo terminals have been deployed.
